Marshall Happer III, North Carolina, 1995

• Won the North Carolina Junior Championships and 2 state high school championships and played at the University of North Carolina.

• Served as President of the Raleigh Community Tennis Association, the North Carolina Tennis Association, and the Southern Tennis Association.

• Founder and President of the Raleigh Racquet Club, a 25-court non-profit tennis facility, in 1968.

• Member of the USTA Executive Committee and nominated for USTA Treasurer in 1981.

• Chief Operating Officer of the Men’s Tennis Council, the international governing body for men’s tennis, from 1981 until it dissolved in 1989.

• Executive Director of USTA from 1990 to 1995 and continued to serve as an outside counsel to the USTA after his retirement involved in television contracts, sponsorships, and other business contracts for the U. S. Open through 2009.

• Inducted into the North Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame in 1981 and the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.

Linda Tuero, Louisiana, 1995

• Won 6 national junior titles, including the USTA Girls 14U Singles Championships, Girls 16U Singles and Doubles Championships, and the Girls 18U Clay Court Championships.

• First woman to receive an athletic scholarship to Tulane University, first woman to play on a varsity team, and the first woman to receive a varsity letter.

• While at Tulane achieved a #1 women’s world ranking in the 21U division and won the 1969 and 1970 U. S. Amateur and 1970 U. S. Open Clay Courts.

• Turned pro in the early 1970’s and reached a ranking of number 10 in the world in 1972 when she won the Italian Open.

• Member of the 1972 and 1973 United States Wightman Cup and Federation Cup teams and served as captain of the Federation Cup team in 1973.

• Competed in all the grand slam tournaments, advancing to the quarterfinals of the 1971 French Open.

• Inducted into the Tulane University Athletic Hall of Fame and the Louisiana Tennis Hall of Fame in 1985.

Harvey Terrell, Alabama, 1994

• Began playing tennis as a freshman at the University of Alabama and mastered the game quickly and played the number 2 position.

• Chairman of the Board of First National Bank in Birmingham and active in his community.

• Served as President of the Southern Lawn Tennis Association and later as a Trustee on the Southern Tennis Patrons Foundation Board.

• Member of the USLTA Executive Committee.

• Ranked as high as eighth in the National Parks Tennis Program.

• Inducted into the Alabama Tennis Hall of Fame in 1986.

• Harvey “Red” Terrell Tennis Center was built in Birmingham in 1989 and named in his honor.

Zan Guerry, Tennessee, 1994

• Top ranked national junior player from the time of his 1960 championship in the Boy’s 11-year-old division.

• Played high school tennis at Baylor School in Chattanooga and later was a 3-time All American at Rice University.

• Following college, he played on the professional circuit where he reached the top 20 in the country and played in all the Grand Slam tournaments.

• Five-time winner of the Southern Men’s Championships.

• Won 25 national championships in singles and doubles, at least one in each decade since his first title in 1960.

• Inducted into the Tennessee Tennis Hall of Fame, Baylor School Athletic Hall of Fame, Rice University Tennis Hall of Fame, Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, and Intercollegiate Tennis Association Hall of Fame.

• Joined his father, Alex, as the first father and son to be inducted into the Southern Tennis Hall of Fame.

Alexander Wellford, Sr., Tennessee, 1994

• Competed successfully in six sports during his youth in Memphis, but tennis was his favorite.

• Attended the University of the South where he was team captain.

• Won the Memphis City Singles Championship at the age of 27 and again 15 years later when he was 42.

• Won numerous national senior titles from 1954 through 1984 including the 1958 National Clay Court Senior Doubles Championships with partner Slew Hester and competed at Wimbledon and the French Championships against the top players in tennis including Vic Seixas, Bobby Riggs, and Bitsy Grant.

• Founded the Memphis Tennis Association and served as its first president.

• Served as President of the Southern Tennis Association and on the Board of the USTA.

• Inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, the Tennessee Tennis Hall of Fame, and the Memphis Tennis Hall of Fame.

Alexander Wellford passed away in 1993.

A.W. “Buck” Archer, North Carolina, 1993

• Started playing tennis when he was 8 and continued through high school, prep school, and while attending Davidson College.

• Following college he returned to Shelby, N. C., where he was the volunteer coach of the Shelby High School tennis team and the Cleveland County Country Club team.

• Played on two championship United States Austria Cup teams, an international team competition for 55-and-over men.

• Captain of the United States Osuna Cup team for 45-and-over men from 1987 to 1991, leading the American team to victory over Mexico four of the five years.

• Won two National Clay Court Championships.

• Won 11 national doubles titles.

• Inducted into the North Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame in 1977.

“Buck” Archer passed away in 2008.

Russell Bobbitt, Georgia, 1993

• Ranked among the top 10 players in the United States as a junior player.

• Played for Georgia Tech where he won the 1938 Southeastern Conference singles and doubles titles.

• Played on the United States Junior Davis Cup team with Jack Kramer and Bill Talbert.

• Volunteer and administrator who served as Vice-President of the Georgia Tennis Association and President of the Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association.

• President of the Senior Tennis Players of Georgia.

• First tennis player inducted into the Georgia Tech Athletic Hall of Fame.

• Inducted into the Georgia Tennis Hall of Fame the first year it was established in 1983.

Russell Bobbitt passed away in 2005.

Henry G. “Hank” Crawford, Georgia, 1993

• After a successful career in law and real estate he concentrated his efforts on tennis and won 12 national doubles titles in the 50, 55, 60 and 70 age divisions.

• European doubles champion with Gardner Mulloy.

• Played on the 1979 United States Britannia Cup team and 1983 Crawford Cup team, and was captain of the Crawford Cup team from 1985 through 1990.

• Captain of the 1992 Bitsy Grant Cup team.

• Received the USTA Senior Service Award in 1978.

• Inducted into the Georgia Tech Athletic Hall of Fame in 1977 and the Georgia Tennis Hall of Fame the first year it was established in 1983.

Mildred F. Southern, North Carolina, 1991

• Attended Appalachian State University where she took up tennis as a recreational player and later worked for the City of Winston-Salem Recreation Department for 14 years supervising numerous tournaments.

• Began to play competitive tournament tennis at age 40 – winning five national championships – and started a long career as a player and volunteer.

• Organized the Winston-Salem Young Folks Tennis Program involving kids 6 to 18 years old in tennis classes and later organized the Twin City Kiwanis Junior Tournament to give young people a chance to compete. Served as the Winston-Salem Tennis Association President.

• Served as President of the North Carolina Tennis Association where she introduced “Tennis Weekend” featuring workshops and clinics which attracted over 300 attendees and later introduced the same idea to the USTA Southern Tennis Association. Led the NC Tennis Foundation, where she served as President.

• Served as USTA Southern President and Southern Tennis Foundation Chairman.

• Organized the first Southern Senior Cup with teams from the 9 states competing and ranked #1 or #2 in the South in several different age groups in both singles and doubles.

• Received the Touchstone Award in 1982, the USTA Southern Jacobs Bowl in 1983, the Charles B. Morris Volunteer Service Award in 1998, and was inducted into the North Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame in 1983 and the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 2013.

• Served on numerous USTA committees and received the USTA Senior Service Award in 1991.

Due to her and her husband, Harold, generosity and service, the following are named after them: The Harold T. and Mildred F. Southern North Carolina Tennis Center, the stadium court at the Winston-Salem Open was named the Harold and Mildred Southern Stadium Court and the Wake Forest University Tennis Competition Seating was named for The Southern Family.

Newton Cox, Alabama, 1991

• Began playing tennis at age 16 and was involved in the sport as a player, coach, and administrator for the remainder of his life.

• Attended the University of Alabama on a tennis scholarship and after a term in the Army returned to Alabama where he coached the men’s tennis team for 13 years.

• Coached and taught at the Mobile Tennis Center for over 35 years.

• Served as President of the Mobile Tennis Club, the Alabama Tennis Association, the Southern Tennis Association, the Alabama Professional Tennis Association, the Southern Professional Tennis Association. and was Vice President of the United States Professional Tennis Association

• Tournament Director for numerous prestigious tournaments including the Alabama Open, Senior Bowl Championships, Southern Junior Open and Closed Championships, and several men’s and women’s professional circuit tournaments.

• Wrote a weekly column titled “Mobile Tennis Notes” in the Sunday edition of the Mobile Register for over 25 years.

• Received over 20 major awards, including the USTA Southern Jacob’s Bowl and was inducted into the Alabama Tennis Hall of Fame in 1990.

• Newton passed away 2003.

Tommy Bartlett, Tennessee, 1990

• Captained both the basketball and tennis teams at the University of Tennessee where he was undefeated in singles or doubles.

• Tennis coach for men and women at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, compiling an overall record of 579-92, an 86% winning percentage.

• While coaching college tennis, he held teaching pro positions at several prestigious tennis facilities including the Chattanooga Tennis Club, Cherokee Country Club, and Manker Patten Tennis Club.

• Recognized by fellow coaches and players as an outstanding teacher, coach, and competitor winning numerous USPTA awards including Coach of the Year (3 times), Pro of the Year (3 times), and Player of the Year (6 times).

• Held numerous USPTA offices, including Florida President and Regional Vice-President and was a member of the NCAA Selection Committee.

• Outstanding player, winning 27 national championships, 35 Southern championships, and 60 state championships.

• Inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 1986, was a member of the first class inducted in the Tennessee Tennis Hall of Fame in 1992, and was inducted in the Intercollegiate Tennis Hall of Fame in 1993.

Roscoe Tanner, Tennessee, 1990

• Ranked #1 in the nation in the Boy’s 18-and-under and led the Baylor School team to two straight High School National Championships and was considered the best junior player ever from the South.

• Three time All-American at Stanford, runner up in the NCAA Singles Championships twice, and won the NCAA Doubles champion once.

• Turned pro in 1972 and over the course of his 10-year career won 15 ATP championships and was runner-up in over 20 other tournaments.

• Grand Slam record stands at 90-32, including the singles championship at the 1977 Australian Open, a finalist at the 1979 Wimbledon Championships where he lost a classic 5-set match to Bjorn Borg, and a quarterfinalist or semifinalist at 9 other Grand Slam events.

• Represented the United States on the Davis Cup team 5 times, including the 1981 championship team.

• 1981 WCT Tour Champion whose fastest serve was clocked at 153 MPH.

• Inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 1992, the Intercollegiate Tennis Hall of Fame in 1993, and the Tennessee Tennis Hall of Fame in 1994.

Roberta Alison Baumgardner, Alabama, 1989

• Accumulated numerous junior titles including the Southern Open, Southern Closed, Orange Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Kentucky State, Florida Yacht Club and Tampa Bay.

• Held the #1 ranking as a junior in both Alabama and the South, and was nationally ranked in the top 20 four times.

• Played on two National Junior Wightman Cup Teams and was a member of the Southern Intersectional Team five years.

• Received the first varsity letter and athletic scholarship awarded by the University of Alabama where she played #4 singles and #2 doubles on the men’s team.

• During her college years she won the Women’s College Championships and the USLTA National College Girls’ Tennis Championships in both singles and doubles.

• Served several years as a volunteer high school tennis coach.

• Inducted into the Alabama Tennis Hall of Fame and the National College Women’s Tennis Hall of Fame in 1987 and the University of Alabama Tennis Hall of Fame in 1988.

H.A. “Ted” Bailey, Jr., Arkansas, 1989

• Had a distinguished medical and business career in Little Rock, Arkansas, serving as head of the Division of Ear, Nose and Throat at the University of Arkansas Medical School and later as the Chief of Staff of the Baptist Hospital in Little Rock.

• Funded the United States Davis Cup team to play an exhibition at the dedication of the Little Rock Racquet Club in 1968.

• Charter Trustee and President of the Arkansas Tennis Patrons Foundation at its inception in 1970, positions he held for over 20 years.

• Won the Arkansas State Father/Son Championships in 1970 and 1980 with his son, Ted III and ranked #1 in Arkansas in doubles in both the 50’s and 55’s age divisions.

• President of the Arkansas Tennis Association in 1970 and 1971 and established the first office and staff for the association.

• President of the Southern Tennis Association in 1974 and 1975 and served on the USTA Executive Committee for eight years.

• Inducted into the Arkansas Tennis Hall of Fame during its first year in 1979.

Ted Bailey passed away in 2019.

Victor Sheshunoff, Arkansas, 1988

• Nationally known in the field of metallurgy and in the sport of tennis.

• Born in Moscow, Russia and educated in Harbin, China, he came to the United States to attend Columbia University where he played #4 on the tennis team.

• Member of the Knoxville, Tennessee, tennis team and President of the Knoxville Tennis Club.

• Moved to Magnolia, Arkansas, in 1951 where he served the Arkansas Tennis Association as a Director and Vice President.

• Held eleven different positions with the Southern Tennis Association and served as the President in 1966-67.

• Served on numerous USTA committees.

• Inducted into the Arkansas Tennis Hall of Fame and received the Southern Tennis Association Jacobs Bowl.

Victor Sheshunoff passed away in 1981.
